In Lightspeed Retail X Series, only one product can use a specific UPC as a SKU code.
To get around this, you are able to add the UPC to the product name (recommended to add it at the end of the name with a space in between it and the product name) and then that UPC will be able to be used my multiple products for both searching and scanning and return all products that contain that UPC.
For this to work properly when scanning items, you will need to configure your barcode scanner to send the data as is for Socket barcode scanners or to remove suffixes for other barcode makes/models so that a carriage return is not added to the end of the data that is scanned.
In this example will will have two products named below.
- Miller Lite 6 Pack 12 oz
- Miller Lite 4/6 Pack 12 oz
Both products have their own automatically generated primary SKU in LSX.
We will be using the below UPC for both of these two products.
- 025600088821
Once the UPC has been appended to the names of the two products and the changes have been saved, we will be able to scan that UPC and have both products come up in searches, in the sales screen, and other areas of LSX.
- Log into your LSX account.
- In the left hand window pane, click "Catalog".
- In the main window pane, search for the products that you wish to add the UPC to. In this example, we have our two Miller Lite products shown below.
- We will go through the same process of editing both products one at a time.
- The first product is named "Miller Lite 4/6 Pack 12 oz" and we will click the pencil icon to the right of the product to edit it.
- It will take us into the "Edit product" screen as shown below.
- The cursor is already in the product name field at the end of the name as you can see by the blue outline for that field.
- Insert a space at the end of the product name.
- Scan the UPC that will be used for this product with your barcode scanner and it will be appended to the product name after the space. You will now see that the product name is "Miller Lite 4/6 Pack 12 oz 025600088821".
- Click "Save" to save the changes to this product.
- You will be taken back to the "Products" screen and can now see that the name for this product has changed to include the UPC at the end of the product name.
- Repeat steps 5 through 11 for the product named "Miller Lite 6 Pack 12 oz".
- Once both products have had the UPC appended at the end of their products named, the search results now show that.
- Going forward, both products will show up in the search results for products, in the sell screen, and other areas of LSX where you will be able to choose the product that you want.
- The example below shows the sell screen where the UPC has been scanned and the two products being returned in the search and able to be selected.
- Since the UPC is not entered for any products as a SKU code, it shows that there are no exact matches by the prompt at the bottom of the search results stating "+ Add "025600088821" as a new product.
- We have now finished adding the same UPC into the product names of the two products in this example.
